College mentor Elisha (in foreground) and other Ford PAS students with student track facilitators Wendy and Leah at the Fox TV station in San Antonio. In this area, we learned how the weather anchor actually stands in front of a green screen that appears to have the weather map when viewed on TV.

Stephen, Marilyn and Michelle and other students took notes on their worksite visit questionnaires while listening to our guide, anchor Cynthia Lee, describe how she writes her own stories for the 9 pm news show.

Michelle, Amanda, Richard, and Travis listening and taking notes in the news room, which was smaller than students expected.

Cynthia, our guide, is about to take us into the editing room, where the video editor picks out the film footage that would best go with each news story.

Signing up at the tent for the Ride and Drive event.

This car skids on purpose (notice back wheels) so participants can practice straightening up after a skid.

Our college mentors, Janelle, Johnathan, and Elisha, showing off the Ford shirts that they received at the Ride and Drive event.

Our college mentors on the last day of the conference, looking tired from the packed schedule and tight deadlines for their media projects.

Johnathan, Marilyn, Amanda, Lebree and Charles (go team Frog!) planning their conference media project.

Third Annual Ford PAS Training and Networking Conference

Final Student Presentations

Fifteen Ford PAS students from six states (Alabama, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, and Rhode Island) attended the Third Annual Ford PAS National Training and Networking Conference, June 20-22, 2005, in San Antonio, TX. Students participated in engaging learning experiences throughout the conference that exemplify the active, hands-on teaching and learning approach of the Ford PAS program. This year’s student track focused on the theme of “Media and Messages.” Students had multiple opportunities to develop their communications and technology skills. They met a video producer who engaged them in activities to challenge their preconceptions about the media and dramatize the dilemma of capturing “both” sides of a news story. They also visited a local TV station to learn firsthand how news stories are crafted. They toured the station’s facilities to learn what happens behind the camera in both studio and newsroom. Students then applied their new knowledge to create and present a multimedia project about the Ford PAS Conference. These multimedia projects can be viewed by clicking the links below.
