Teaching Suggestions

Classroom Visitors
Over the course of this module, consider inviting into the classroom several visitors representing local businesses, professional or trade organizations, colleges or universities, and the community. For ideas about locating potential visitors and speakers, click the Coordinate Learning Experiences link. Contact business or university representatives to schedule a visit at least a month before beginning the module.

Design for the Environment (DFE) Project
Throughout Closing the Environmental Loop, students develop a proposal to redesign a product to make it more environmentally sustainable. In order to develop their proposals, students research many aspects of a particular product:
In Activity 6, students present their proposals to their peers, who review both the proposals and the effectiveness of the presentations.

Video
Segments of the video, The Next Industrial Revolution—William McDonough, Micahel Braungart, and the Birth of the Sustainable Economy, are used in three activities during Closing the Environmental Loop. In Activity 1, the first video segment titled “Taking the Next Step” is used in Session 3 as an introduction to the Design for the Environment Project. In Activity 3, two video segments are shown during Session 18 to introduce students to two companies that use innovative strategies to reduce energy consumption in their facilities. In Activity 4, another video segment is used during Session 19 to show the importance of considering the supply chain when a company strives to make environmentally sustainable products. This video may be available from your local library or video store, or go to the Ford PAS Online Catalog to purchase this video.
