Student Notebooks
Students will need a notebook to record their work for Media and Messages, including their class notes, reflections, and other assignments.
Video
Two videos are used during Module 2. The first video, shown in ACTIVITY 1, is a television commercial to introduce students to communication techniques used in advertising. The television commercial can be purchased from the
Ford PAS online catalog. The second video, Job Interviews, shows two job interviews and is designed to be used during ACTIVITY 3 and ACTIVITY 6. View the video
Job Interviews online or go to the
Ford PAS online catalog to acquire the video in either VHS or DVD formats by purchasing the item "Ford PAS Videos." Students may also view Job Interviews online by selecting it from the Module 2 Resources menu in the Ford PAS Student Center.
Ongoing Assignments
In Media and Messages, students have one ongoing assignment, a Media Log. Students can keep
this assignment in a separate section of their notebooks, which you can check at the end of each
activity. In the Media Log students summarize information about advertisements in one of four forms of
media to which they’ve been assigned. The information from the Media Log is then used in ACTIVITY 6,
when students develop advertising campaigns by working in teams made up of specialists in each
form of media. The advertising campaigns require advertisements in each of these forms of media.
Over the course of the module, students are responsible for evaluating 10 advertisements in their
assigned form of media. Periodically remind students of this ongoing assignment.
There are also several Media Exercises in Media and Messages. These Media Exercises are not part
of the ongoing Media Log assignment. The purpose of these Media Exercises is to introduce issues of
communication and diversity, and to engage students at the beginning of a session. After each Media
Exercise, ask students to consider how they might apply what they have learned about the issue
raised when they develop an advertising campaign for Quick ’n Tastee at the end of the module.
